Fun Facts about the "Windy City", Chicago

* Chicago is home to many tall structures. The Willis Tower (formerly called Sears Tower) in Chicago is the second tallest building in the Western Hemisphere at 110 stories high.
* In 1900, Chicago successfully completed an amazing engineering project - the flow of the Chicago River was reversed so that it emptied into the Mississippi River instead of Lake Michigan. This was done to prevent the contamination of the Lake Michigan due to sewage.
* The Magnificent Mile (a street in the Downtown Chicago) contains upscale shopping outlets, restaurants, financial services companies and luxury retailers. It caters primarily to tourists and the affluent.
* The Chicago Fire in 1871, destroyed 17,450 buildings and left 90,000 homeless in 2.7 sq. miles. There were few buildings that survived, two of which were the Water Tower Place and the Clock Tower.
